چکیده

Although distance metric learning has been successfully applied to many real-world applications, learning a distance metric from large-scale and high-dimensional data remains a challenging problem. Due to the PSD constraint, the computational complexity of previous algorithms per iteration is at least O(d) where d is the dimensionality of the data. In this paper, we develop an efficient stochastic algorithm for a class of distance metric learning problems with nuclear norm regularization, referred to as low-rank DML. By utilizing the low-rank structure of the intermediate solutions and stochastic gradients, the complexity of our algorithm has a linear dependence on the dimensionality d. The key idea is to maintain all the iterates in factorized representations and construct stochastic gradients that are low-rank. In this way, the projection onto the PSD cone can be implemented efficiently by incremental SVD. Experimental results on several data sets validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method.

Scalable Metric Learning via Weighted Approximate Rank Component Analysis

Our goal is to learn a Mahalanobis distance by minimizing a loss defined on the weighted sum of the precision at different ranks. Our core motivation is that minimizing a weighted rank loss is a natural criterion for many problems in computer vision such as person re-identification. We propose a novel metric learning formulation called Weighted Approximate Rank Component Analysis (WARCA). We th...

Sparse Metric Learning via Smooth Optimization

In this paper we study the problem of learning a low-rank (sparse) distance matrix. We propose a novel metric learning model which can simultaneously conduct dimension reduction and learn a distance matrix. The sparse representation involves a mixed-norm regularization which is non-convex. We then show that it can be equivalently formulated as a convex saddle (min-max) problem. From this saddle...

An Effective Approach for Robust Metric Learning in the Presence of Label Noise

Many algorithms in machine learning, pattern recognition, and data mining are based on a similarity/distance measure. For example, the kNN classifier and clustering algorithms such as k-means require a similarity/distance function. Also, in Content-Based Information Retrieval (CBIR) systems, we need to rank the retrieved objects based on the similarity to the query. As generic measures such as ...

Learning Distance Functions using Equivalence Relations

We address the problem of learning distance metrics using side-information in the form of groups of "similar" points. We propose to use the RCA algorithm, which is a simple and efficient algorithm for learning a full ranked Mahalanobis metric (Shental et al., 2002). We first show that RCA obtains the solution to an interesting optimization problem, founded on an information theoretic basis. If ...
